There are only a few more days left in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, but the destination itself continues to compete for tourists’ affection.
Despite the cold temperatures, competition among Asian countries throughout the Games has been hot, with the host nation securing four gold, two silver and two bronze medals; China locking down five silver and two bronze; and Japan taking home two gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
Many visiting for the Games stay in Seoul and take the train to PyeongChang; from there, shuttle services are available between venues. It was predicted before the Games more than 20,000 passengers a day would travel on trains, with the region’s bullet train reducing what would be a three-hour trip from Seoul to just over an hour.
In addition to witnessing the Games’ momentous events, many experienced PyeongChang’s natural beauty for the first time — one of the benefits Olympics host nations enjoy. The destination, to which Korea hopes to see an increase in tourism, has a lot to offer. More than $12.9 billion was spent on the games, invested in modern resorts nestled among the mountains; new roads, highways and trains; and improved winter sport venues — all of which travellers can enjoy after the Winter Games come to an end.
There’s talk the scenic Jeongseon Alpine Centre, where downhill skiing events took place, may become a high-end leisure destination following the Games, and the Alpensia Resort in Daegwallyeong-myeon will continue to offer some of the finest ski trails in South Korea.
The Phoenix Snow Park — the official venue for Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboarding — is only two hours from Seoul, perched on Taegisan Mountain. Renowned for its natural beauty and quality snow, the resort is a winter sports lover’s dream.
Opened in 1975, Yongpyong Ski Resort was the first in South Korea and one of the largest with 14 lifts, a gondola and 28 trails. It hosts slalom and giant slalom events in the Games. In warmer months, Yongpyong is a popular golf destination.
Other notable mountain resorts worth a trip back to South Korea include Konjiam, which caps visitors at 7,000 per day to limit crowds; and High1, known for its varied course difficulties and quality powder.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
